In
Genesis chapter 3, God dealt various judgments against those who brought sin
into His perfect world. Adam, Eve, and the serpent all heard the consequences
of their rebellion. God said to the serpent, "And I will put enmity
between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise
your head, and you shall bruise his foot." Genesis 3:15. God has mercy in
this judgment too. In particular, God's curse on the serpent speaks of the
future.
The woman
mentioned in Genesis 3:15 is Eve. In this verse Satan used the serpent directly
to deceive Eve. We see here that some curses were directed at animals in
Genesis 3:14; At the same time, God's curse descends on Satan. In the Garden of
Eden Satan assumed the form or body of a serpent. As part of the curse, enmity
and mutual hatred will exist between the woman and the serpent.
Their
descendants will remain enemies for generations. The serpent's figurative
offspring are demonic forces and those who follow Satan and do his will. The
Lord Jesus called the Pharisees "a generation of vipers" in Matthew
12:34. In short, God said that Satan will always be the enemy of mankind.
Ephesians 6:12 says, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but
against all principalities, against all powers, against the rulers of this
darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the heavenly places."
"Genesis
3:15 is a remarkable passage, often called the proto evangelium, literally,
"the first gospel, or first good news, because it is the first prophecy of
a savior in the Bible. The second half of this sentence gives two messianic
prophecies about that Savior: The first messianic prophecy in Genesis 3:15 is "he
shall bruise your head," that is, the seed of the woman shall bruise the
serpent's head. The Bible makes it clear that the "seed of the woman"
is more than mankind in general; A person who will represent all mankind: The
second Messianic prophecy in Genesis 3:15 is that "Thou shalt crush his
footstool.
"
That is, the serpent will bite the foot of the "seed of the woman."
This verse refers to the birth of the Lord Jesus, the redemption of all mankind
by Him, and His promise of victory over Satan. The seed of the woman is Jesus
Christ. Being born of a virgin, He is literally of a woman. Son Matthew 1:25.
Being the Son of Man, He is a perfect representative of mankind. Satan and his
followers were waiting for the Savior and afflicted Him.
The Lord
Jesus had to be crucified because of their poisonous plot. We must remember
that the serpent did not end the woman's lineage. The Lord Jesus rose again on
the third day, breaking the power of death and winning the final victory. By
dying on the cross, the Lord Jesus "crushed" Satan's head, defeating
him forever. So, in Genesis 3:15, the crushing of the serpent's head was a
picture of Jesus' victory over sin and Satan on the cross.
The
wounding of the Messiah's feet was a picture of Jesus' wounding and death on
the cross. Satan struck the feet of the Lord Jesus but God the Son Jesus Christ
showed complete authority over Satan by crushing his "head". Satan,
though still active in this world, is a defeated enemy. His doom is certain:
"the deluding devil was cast into the lake of 'fire and brimstone'"
Revelation 20:10. Until that time, enmity remains between Satan and the
children of God.
